SCC - Digital Services

About
Digital Services
The SCC employs highly specialized imaging and multimedia
tools in the development of digital projects. The large-format scanner,
one of the few available in the entire state, is ideal for digitizing
large objects such as sheet maps and broadsides. The large capacity
storage devices, servers, and backup systems enable the SCC to provide
specialized digital services to the Rutgers University community.
Who Can Use?
The SCC and its resources are available to members
of the Rutgers University community, to project partners, and on
a limited basis, the general public. Grant funded project partners
have priority use of funded services and tools. The facilities of
the SCC supplement the digital resources already available on campus.
Rutgers University Computing Services (RUCS), Creative Services,
and the Teaching Excellence Center (TEC) provide a variety of general
digital production services. Please consult "Scanning
and other Multimedia Production Services Available at Rutgers -
New Brunswick Campuses" to determine if your project is
better initiated in one of the general labs on campus.

Large Format Scanning
Service
Introduction
Large Format refers to documents exceeding the dimensions
of 8.5" x 17". The Large Format Scanning system in use
is a PhaseOne P45 mounted on a Hasselbach H101,
with the capacity to scan documents up to 36" in width and
48 " in length with full 32-bit color. The scanner provides
true optical resolution of up to 600 dpi. Several file formats are
available for high quality presentations.
Scanning Services
The SCC staff will scan projects of 20 items or
less. Projects encompassing greater than 20 items can be self-scanned
by the user, after receiving training on the operation of the scanner.
Scanner use is scheduled by advance reservation.
Smaller projects are temporarily stored as uncompressed
tiff files, until retrieved by the requestor. Larger projects can
be temporarily stored on the network in a selected format, for eventual
retrieval by the user. The SCC does not retain any file copies.
The dimensions of the copies and the resolution required must be
submitted in advance of scanning.
Fees
A modest usage fee is charged to cover the cost
of experienced personnel required to administer and operate the
underlying technology. Pricing is determined by the final size of
the scanned image as described in the pricing grid below:
| Affiliation |
First 150 MB |
Additional 150 MB (per 150
MB) |
| RU Faculty, Staff and Students |
$10.00 |
$5.00 |
| Grant affiliates |
$10.00 |
$5.00 |
| General Public |
$15.00 |
$6.00 |
* A 310 MB scan would cost either
$15.00 or $20.00 depending on your affiliation
Reserving the Scanner
To make a reservation, please contact Isaiah Beard
at (732) 932-8573, extension 177 to set up an appointment. Be sure
to bring with you a completed copy of the Large
Format Scanning Request and Control Form (pdf document).
Large Format Printing
Service
Introduction
In addition to scanning Large Format documents,
the SCC has the ability to take a digital image or document and
print it as a large format item at up to 600 dots per inch (dpi).
Using our Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 1055CM printer, high resolution
full color prints can be made of your digital files on either standard
or photo-quality paper.
Printing Services
Printing of large format documents is done by reservation,
and generally requires a 24 to 48 hour turnaround time, depending
on the size and number of documents printed. Digital images submitted
for printing should either be pre-sized at the correct dimensions
and resolution required, or should be of a high enough resolution
that they can be enlarged for printing without degradation. If you
are printing a scanned photograph or Photoshop-based image, we stronlgy
recommend that the image have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi if
the image is already at full size, or 600 to 1200 dpi if the image
must be enlarged. PowerPoint files, EPS files, and some PDFs are
usually vector-based and will not have a minimum resolution requirement.
The SCC can accept documents and images stored on
CD/R/RW, DVD, or USB drive formats. We can also read most CompactFlash
(Type I and II), SD/MMC cards, and Memory sticks. Images stored
on ftp or web sites can also be retrieved. The preferred file formats
are as follows:
- MS Powerpoint (please use "page setup"
to size your presentation slide to correct dimensions)
- Adobe Acrobat (PDF)
- TIFF
- High Resoluton JPG with minimal compression
- Most "RAW" formats from digital cameras
(for best results, please submit images that are 6 megapixels
or higher)
Please note that image formats which incorporate
data compression may degrade the image quality. This degradation
will be become more apparent when such images are printed in large
format sizes.
The SCC can also accept files in the following
formats, on a limited basis. When using these formats, please make
sure that any text is formatted using commonly available (or embedded)
fonts, or that text is converted to outlines, to ensure that the
text appears as expected.
- Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop (up
to version CS2)
- Encapsulated EPS
Fees
In order to recoup the operating cost of the large
format printer, including supplies, maintenance and the use of skilled
staff to operate the printer, modest printing fees are charged.
Pricing is determined by physical size of the printed document in
square feet, according to the table below:
| Paper Quality |
Price per square foot |
| Standard Paper |
$2.00 |
| Photo Quality Paper (Semi-Gloss) |
$3.00 |
| Photo Quality Paper (Glossy) |
$3.50 |
A typical print, such as a 24"x36" poster,
would cost $12.00 for standard paper, $18.00 for semi-gloss, and $21.00 for high-gloss photo quality
paper.
Requesting a Print
To schedule a an appointment for documents to be
printed, print the Large
Format Printing Request and Control Form and send the completed
form to

Web Hosting Service
Introduction
The SCC creates and hosts websites which have strong
scholarly components and which complement the missions of both the
Rutgers University Libraries and Rutgers University. Partnerships
with the Rutgers University academic community and its institutes
and centers are actively solicited. Collaborations are formed with
non-profit entities external to Rutgers University when such collaborations
are mutually beneficial to both the SCC and the external partner.
Services
In addition to the servers, the SCC infrastructure
includes a data persistence strategy, including daily and monthly
backups, and archival storage for image based projects. Expert system
and application level consultation is always available. Websites
are migrated forward as new operating systems and software applications
develop. The Data Center is an open laboratory for development,
providing software tools such as Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop and
DjVu to implement user development.
Server Technology
The servers run on the Windows 2003 Server operating
system and use Microsoft's Internet Information Services. The main
server is an AMD Athlon64 based system with 2GB of main memory.
The server is equipped with ample secondary storage and there is
a network addressed mass storage device for archiving digital images.
Exploratory projects can be run on a separate Linux server using
Apache as the web server, with php and mySQL capabilities.
Fees
Annual fees are charged for hosting, archival storage
of data, and for ongoing consultation and systems support. Fees
are determined by the complexity of administering the web site,
and the anticipated number of updates and modifications.
