| A Digital Library Platform
The New
Jersey Environmental Digital Library (NJEDL) was developed as
part of a grant from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
Over the past two years, the NJEDL has been developed into a robust
digital library platform that can readily be used in other applications.
The platform includes the major components of a digital library
including the following:
1) ability to create and submit metadata from the Web.
2) ability to submit documents from the Web.
3) a variety of search options using standard Boolean operations
and application specific controlled vocabulary.
4) ability to view results and download digital objects.
5) capabilities for archiving the digital documents.
6) an administrative subsystem including extensive usage statistics.
The SCC has packaged a complete working copy of the NJEDL with
sample digital documents. All of the code and data along with installation
instructions are zipped into a single file for ease of downloading.
The basic system prerequisites for installing the NJEDL are a server
running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, Internet Information
Services, Macromedia Cold Fusion Server 5.0, and Microsoft Access 2000. A user's first
step is to unzip the digital library files and get the basic system
running as is. After basic installation and operation have been
achieved, the user can then customize the database, the controlled
vocabulary, and the "look & feel" in order to meet
the needs of a specific application. SCC staff are available for
limited consultation during the installation process.
The NJEDL platform can be made freely available to universities,
non-profit institutions, and their staff, students, and faculty.
The SCC would review each request individually. Interested users
should contact the Head,
Scholarly Communication Center. Note that permission to distribute
the platform to the above institutions has been granted by the NJ
Department of Environmental Protection.
